Here are the five must-see bridges of Amsterdam, for anyone planning to explore the city by boat or for those who wonder why so many pictures are taken of certain bridges. Hire a boat directly from our boat rental and explore Amsterdam!
The Skinny Bridge
Maybe a bit standard, but you can’t ignore it. The Skinny Bridge is the most famous, oldest and also most photographed bridge in Amsterdam. Opinions are divided about where the name “Skinny Bridge” comes from, but there is no disputing its beauty. It is therefore not surprising that the makers of the James Bond film Diamonds are Forever chose to use the bridge as a film set.
The Blue Bridge
It’s not entirely true that the name “Blue Bridge” is based on the colour of the bridge. Nowadays, this bridge may not be blue, but it used to be. For those who have ever walked along the Seine in Paris, it may be a recognisable architectural style. The design has been copied from the French and that is clearly visible.
The Staalmeestersbrug
This romantic bridge will bring out the feelings of love in you. A cute old-fashioned drawbridge that many people find very romantic. Until 2015, many couples hung little locks on it to seal their eternal love. When the city noticed that this was causing too much damage, they put a stop to it. The view from the bridge on the Zuiderkerk is magnificent, making it a popular spot for photos. With a magnificent view of the Zuiderkerk, you will be amazed by this bridge.
The Torensluis bridge
This bridge is no less than 42 metres wide, making it one of the widest bridges in Amsterdam. It owes its name to a tower that used to stand on the bridge, which was later removed. Under the bridge, you will find spaces that used to serve as prison cells, later as event spaces and now as neighbourhood spaces.
The Love Bridge
This bridge does not really belong in this list, as you cannot cruise past it with your boat, but it is so romantic that we would be doing it an injustice if we did not mention it. There is no need to go to Central Park in New York for a marriage proposal, as this bridge has exactly the same atmosphere and can be found in Sarphatipark. Officially, the love bridge has only been named recently, but most people in Amsterdam have been calling it that for a long time.
In short, if you have made the wonderful decision to rent a boat in Amsterdam, then you know which bridges should be on your route! Besides beautiful bridges, Amsterdam has a lot more to offer. For instance, there are many events on the Amsterdam Canals.
