Rules for the self-drive boats on Amsterdam’s Canals

t Eco Boats Amsterdam, you can sail yourself without a boating licence. Before you leave, we explain how the boat works and which route rules to follow. To prepare for your rental, please read the navigation rules in advance to be well-prepared.

Important rules:

  • Music on board is not allowed
  • You cannot sail on the IJ
  • The captain must stay sober
  • The captain must be at least 18 years old
  • Always keep to the maximum boat capacity

Sail with electric boats in Amsterdam

All our self-drive boats are electric. That means a quiet cruise through Amsterdam with less noise, no fuel smell, and a cleaner way to enjoy the canals. Rent your boat, sail yourself, and keep the experience simple from start to finish.

Additional boat activities

Plastic fishing: €3 per person
We provide nets and garbage bags on board, so you can collect plastic from the canals while you sail.

Quiz: €3 per person
Add a quiz to your boat rental and play while you cruise. Who will get the most answers correct? There is a version for children and adults.

Yes. For larger groups we offer private salon boats with a skipper, accommodating for 50 or 75 people. These are ideal for corporate events, large celebrations, and group occasions. Contact us for availability and pricing.

A one-hour canal cruise with a skipper, highlights of the city, and a complimentary drink. Highlights include the canals, the Amstel River, the Skinny Bridge, and the historic city centre.

Yes. Our public canal cruise includes a QR code on board. By scanning it with your smartphone, you can follow the skipper's commentary in 8 languages: Dutch, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese.

Yes. You can book many different add-on activities that can be booked in advance. However, the activities you are able to book vary depending on the product: Self Drive

  • Our self-drive boats are open. Umbrellas may be available in light rain.
